This site is dedicated to some old DOS games. Not all of them, just those that I played in the 90's and left me a lasting memory.

Do you remember what video games looked like, before the standards of Windows and DirectX ?
I won't go back to the early 80's (although I remember spending lots of time with my first console - Philips Videopac, a clone of Atari 2600). I'll start in the early 90's, when games displayed scenes in 320x200 pixels and hardly 256 colours, with optimized algorithms for 12MHz machines with 1MB RAM and no hard disk :

Since Windows95, the games have been relying on DirectX for managing graphics, sound, and peripherics. Nowadays 3D is the standard, nothing to say about that, it produced lots of beautiful games.
But the memory of these old games remains... so I decided to talk about them.

And especially the "Ultima" saga : I discovered this series in 1990, with Ultima 6. It was my first video game, and since I had no experience in RPG, I found it very hard to achieve ! It took me several months with the help from other players. I even remember ordering the official "Clue Book" from Origin because I was stuck in the very end of the game (missing the word triggering Ephemerides' answer for the blue lens). I really loved this game.

Naturally, in the following years I played "Ultima 7" ("Black Gate" and "Serpent Isle"), "Utima 8" (disappointing), and "Utima 9" (nice, but some dungeons had illogical and very artificial challenges).
Of course, I also played "Ultima Underworld 1" (good 3D-engine for that time, and the feeling of immersion was better than anything before), and then its sequel "UW2".

A few years ago, I felt like playing these games again. So I bought Origin's "Ultima Collection" (U1 to U8) and tried to install and run them under Win98. It didn't give good results : no sound, crashes sometimes...

I finally used the excellent DosDox program, which I recommend to everyone wishing to run MS-Dos games under Windows. It manages to run these games with all features working fine (especially the sound).

Difficult not to mention also a few early-windows games, so here's a small section about ...
